Salamander Irons or Salamander Rods
These sturdy cast-aluminum salamanders with wood handles are used to caramelize sugar toppings by heating them red-hot and pressing them onto the sugar. SurLaTable.com

Salamander/Caramelizer
In mythological tradition, the salamander is a lizard-like creature that lives in fire. It is not surprising then, that some French epicure thought to name this metal tool after the salamander. If you want to brown a dish that has delicate ingredients that burn easily, a salamander will quickly caramelize the top without overcooking the food. Just put the metal end of the salamander on your stovetop burner until it becomes red-hot. Then, holding it by the comfortable wooden handle, pass it over custard or a gratin and the surface of the food will turn golden brown before your eyes. Amazon.com
